After 'EMERGING KERALA - GLOBAL CONNECT 2012', A MBA In Kerala Promises Better Return On Investment

An economic downturn usually results in industry scepticism towards recruitment. If placement results at SCMS-Cochin, one of the top MBA colleges in Kerala and South India, is something to go by then fears of a slowdown do not hold much water.

An economic downturn usually results in industry scepticism towards recruitment. If placement results at SCMS-Cochin, one of the top MBA colleges in Kerala and South India, is something to go by then fears of a slowdown do not hold much water.

While SCMS-Cochin has always been a prominent recruiting ground for companies in South India and the Middle East countries, it has been the favourite for Kerala based organisations. In the wake of the recent 'Emerging Kerala - Global Connect 2012' between 12-14 September 2012, Kerala has been blueprinted as a global business destination by the central government. It may be recalled that student managers from SCMS-Cochin were a part of the organising and co-ordinating team of 'Emerging Kerala - Global Connect 2012'. The mega-event, held at Hotel Le Meridien,Cochin, had the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Defence Minister, Shri A.K. Anthony addressing the global corporate and political fraternity, on why India perceives Kerala as the next big business hub, and the possibilities that Kerala offers. This seems to have opened up the floodgates of opportunities for international organisations showing interest in setting up business in Kerala.

"Recruiters are keen observers; 50% of their judgement is based on visual perception and body language," points out Mr. Joseph George, Placement Coordinator at SCMS-Cochin. "Companies are not looking for a gold medallist or a genius. They check the basic qualities, and basic knowledge that a candidate has about the world. Academic pedigree is usually ascertained by the MBA college that you are passing out of. To be honest, the faculty and students of SCMS-Cochin have been thanking me for the placements. But its not because of me, but because of the reputation of this institution that multinationals and corporates come in. I am just a point of contact between the industry and the institute."

Going by recruitment statistics of SCMS-Cochin this year, the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance sector is clearly in a bullish mood. Of nearly 100 management students who have been placed so far, the BFSI sector has recruited almost 50%. Apart from this, 6 students from SCMS-Cochin will be joining the FMCG sector, 12 students will be going to consulting firms, and 8 will join the IT & ITES sector. Interestingly Media and Entertainment companies have so far recruited 5 students - an unprecedented high.

"Initially, the schedule was hectic when the placements started in November 2012. This continued till January 2013, after which there was a bit of a slowdown last month. But March month has been very active. More than 30 companies have recruited from SCMS-Cochin, while another dozen companies are presently conducting their interviewing process. So far 18 new companies have visited campus this year."

The CTC has so far ranged between 4.00 lakh per annum to 6.50 Lakhs per annum. However, foreign recruiters are yet to make their presence felt at SCMS-Cochin. As a trend, foreign recruiters come in only towards the end. Last year, Kadence International appeared in the later half of the placement season and made an offer of 13 Lakhs Per Annum to one of the management graduates. The regulars at the SCMS-Cochin campus included top companies like Deloitte, Coca Cola, PepsiCo, HDFC Asset Management, ICICI Securities, Madura Fashion and Lifestyle, Hawkins, Berger Paints, Madras Cements, Kotak Mahindra, Asian Paints, ITC, Reliance Money, Malayala Manorama, South Indian Bank Limited etc. Those who have recruited for the first time this year include companies like HSIL, Future Generali Life Insurance, Muthoot FinCorp, ICICI Prudential, Spices Board, Decathlon Sports India, Medgenome Molecular Diagnostics etc.

With 'National Geographic - Traveller' outlining Kerala as one of the '50 destinations of a lifetime' and one of the 13 paradises in the world, doing an MBA in Kerala seems to be making increasing sense. As of now, SCMS-COCHIN and IIM Kozhikode seem to be heads and shoulders above other MBA colleges in Kerala.
